AM Attacks FAW Over HatTrick Money

Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones has criticised the FAW over their use off money from UEFA's HatTrick shceme to help set up their new HQ in Cardiff Bay.

The politician and Rhyl fan is unhappy that £1 million in funding has been put towards the luxurious office complex rather than go towards the domestic game.

FAW secretary-general David Collins claimed Jones had been "misled", however she responded with:

"I remain concerned about the priorities shown by the Football Association of Wales.

"I never suggested that this money could not legitimately be spent on national headquarters, but the people I have spoken to were under the strong impression that this funding was initially earmarked for supporting ground improvements to bring them up to UEFA criteria.

"If, as Mr Collins asserts, I have been misled and the funding cannot be used for such purposes then the FAW needs to set the record straight.

"In terms of developing the young talent that exists in our country a semi-professional level such as the Welsh Premier League is a crucial link, particularly given that we have only three professional clubs playing in the English Football League.

"Lee Trundle is one example, among many, of a young man, who first came to prominence playing for Rhyl FC, before being snapped up by first Wrexham and now
Swansea City.

"I don't seriously expect the FAW to back down on its decision, but I hope the association can have the grace to acknowledge the damage done to its reputation and that Mr Collins will take up my offer of a meeting to discuss what the national body is doing and what more can be done to support the beautiful game in
North Wales."
