Cardiff City’s goalkeeper Neil Alexander has revealed the advice of Cardiff goalkeeping coach George Wood was the main reason he stayed at Ninian Park to make a successful bid to regain the number one jersey despite falling to third in the pecking order..

Poor form saw the former
Livingston
keeper fall behind both Martyn Margetson and Tony Warner in the pecking order.

However the ex-Scotland squad member knuckled down to eventually become first choice last season after nearly 14 months out.

"George (Wood) simply reiterated what I felt deep inside," said Alexander. "He told me to stay and said I had a quality which would eventually shine through.

"I needed someone else to confirm my own feelings and George has been like a second father to me. He convinced me to fight on.

"I can't count the number of occasions I used to go round to his house in the evenings for little a chat with him when I was at my lowest ebb."

Alexander broke back into the Cardiff side in January and played through to the end of the season for the Bluebirds, conceding 13 goals in 17 games keeping 5 clean sheets in the process
