Scotland have quashed England's hopes of putting a British football team into the 2012 London Olympics.
At present Britain do not enter a team, and it is the fear of many fans, as I fear, it would damage the independent status of the English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish unions.
There have been talks before of forming a British side for the 2008 Olympics, and with Wembley in London, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and Hamden Park in Glasgow set to be the major venues for football at the Olympics in 2012, the Government, London Olympics team and the English FA want to enter a team into their home Olympics, as it would appear does David Beckham.
FA executive director David Davies hopes a solution can be found.
"We will now look with urgency at how the home nations could take part in the football tournaments," Davies said today.
However, the Scottish Football Association has reiterated its opposition to a GB team.
A spokeswoman said: "Our footballing identity is Scottish. We have discussed the idea of a British Olympic team in the past and turned it down. There was no interest."
It is also believed that the Football Association of Wales will snub the GB team.
