Bad Day for Footballers

Last updated : 15 June 2005 By Gary Fish

Yesterday, by all accounts, was not a good day for footballers.

Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend George Best was arrested after allegedly assaulting a 13-year old girl last week; Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie has been arrested in Rotterdam following allegations of rape; while it was announced that Liverpool’s Steve Finnan was arrested and bailed in April on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving; finally Davor Suker was questioned over the murder of his business partner and agent who was killed in a car explosion..

An accusation of rape however is easy to make. And false rape accusations against footballers are not all that uncommon as we have seen before.

Suker is not known to be a prime suspect, with some 200 people being questioned over his agent’s death.

Finnan was arrested two months ago about an incident that occurred in Liverpool in January, and we may only find out more about that when he has to report to a police station on June 29.

Van Persie has had problems in Holland in the past, and it could be that the allegations made against him are an attempt to demean his character.

All in all, bad press is bad press, and with footballers facing enough of it for their lavish lifestyles and seemingly untouchable status from the legal system when it comes to breaking the law.
