Wrexham striker Juan Ugarte scored again for the relegated League One side leaving Cardiff City boss Lennie Lawrence poised to make an official move for the Basque star.
Lawrence sent coach Paul Wilkinson to the Vetch Field on Wednesday to cast a watchful eye over the former Real Sociedad striker, and with no shortage of clubs interested in securing the services for next season Lawrence will have to move quickly to win Ugarte's signature.
The dilemma for Cardiff, is whether Ugarte could make the grade in Championship football. The standard between the mid-table teams in the Championship and League Two is season is huge and while Wales boss John Toshack believes Ugarte could step up to the mark, Cardiff will have to be 100% sure, with their mounting debts and spiralling wage bill.
Toshack said: "He's an exciting striker who can do exciting things.
"With me he was unlucky with injuries, but he's a striker who is a little bit different."
With Ugarte out of contract this summer, he would be available on a free - cheaper than their other targets - and it would not break the bank for Cardiff to pay his wages, however, Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield United are among teams watching Ugarte's situation, despite the star saying he wishes to remain at Wrexham.
Coach Wilkinson will submit a report on Ugarte at the beginning of next week when manager Lennie Lawrence and City owner Sam Hammam meet to decide on Ugarte and other possible signings, Yeovil's Phil Jevons, Swindon's Sam Parkin and Oldham's Luke Beckett who are also linked with the south Wales club.
