Fletcher to Fight for Place at Upton Park

West Ham and Wales midfielder Carl Fletcher is confident he can play a part in the club's Premiership future.

Despite £20m being made to strengthen the squad for their assault on the Premiership, the 25-year old will fight for his place at Upton Park.

Fletcher told the Western Mail: "Everyone's revelling in the glory of going up, we're not wondering about next season.

"I've gone from League One to Wales duty and winning Premiership promotion, that's a massive step."

Neither Fletcher nor countryman Gavin Williams played in West Ham's 1-0 Play-Off win over Preston in Cardiff with Fletcher understandably disappointed, however the former Bournemouth player said: "I was massively disappointed not be involved because it was the biggest game of my career.

"I've just got to deal with it and look forward to next season.

"The manager told me I was going to be a substitute at our training ground last Saturday. He called me into his office and had a word with me," revealed Fletcher.

"I was totally gutted. It was a big blow. I've played at the Millennium Stadium before, with Wales, but the play-off final was the first time I've been there with a full house.

"After we got that win at Ipswich, and not many teams go there and win, I was hoping to be in the side for the play-off final.

"But the manager felt he had to change the system and he has every right to do that. It's horses for courses and what he did worked for us on the day.

"He played 4-5-1 at Ipswich but he went back to a 4-4-2 and put Shaun on the right. I thought he did well against Preston, he was one of the best players on the pitch."

"It's hard to describe how I felt on the day," admitted Fletcher.

"There was the high of going up but at the same time I was so disappointed not to be involved."

"West Ham is a big club," explained Fletcher. "The fans have high expectation levels. They expect the team to be in the Premier League.

"The club also has a great history. They've had great teams and great players."

Fletcher is not worried about his future at Upton Park despite not featuring in the final.

"At the moment everyone is revelling in the glory of going up into the Premiership. I don't think the players are wondering about what might happen to them in the summer," he said.

"We've got a good squad. The manager will add players to it and it will be interesting to see what he does. It's up to individuals to show they are good enough to stay in the side or the squad. It will be disappointing if you're told you're not good enough."

West Ham will now look to stay in the top flight following their two seasons in the Champioship.
