Cardiff City owner Sam Hammam has been injured in New York as he celebrated the birth of triplet grand-daughters.

Hammam suffered a severe arm injury as well as cuts and bruises after being struck by a Range Rover as he opened the door to get into his parked car.

He subsequently spent six hours being treated in hospital and said: "I was lucky, so lucky.

"Another inch or two closer and I would have been crushed against my own car.

"It could have been so much more serious. I dread to think what might have happened."

Hammam flew to New York last week to be with son Zaid and his American wife Laura, who was expecting the triplets.

The children were delivered by caesarean section at 34 weeks and are all doing well.

A delighted Hammam said: "They are beautiful - my little chicklets."
