Kavanagh First Casualty at Cardiff?

Cardiff City's captain Graham Kavanagh could be the first casualty at Ninian Park as the club look to rectify worrying financial problems could result in the shock sale of skipper Graham Kavanagh.

Despite assurances from boss Lennie Lawrence yesterday that no player would be sold before the weekend, it is now believed that high-flying Wigan Athletic are looking to snap up the Irish midfielder for around £400,000.

Kavanagh was Cardiff's first £1m purchase just four years ago, and during that time earned a recall into the Irish squad as well as being made skipper, being influential in Cardiff’s rise to the Championship.

With Cardiff’s finances in serious question this week, it is expected that this is the first step towards fending off any talk of crisis at the club as chairman Sam Hammam looks for cutbacks to finance a rumoured £750,000 a month wage bill.

Other players likely to be axed at Cardiff include striker Peter Thorne and Jobi McAnuff.

It is not expected that Wales internationals James Collins or Danny Gabbidon will leave just yet, with the transfer window closed to Premier League clubs.
