A disappointing second half display saw Wrexham surrender a half time lead as league leaders Luton Town came back to win 2-1, seriously denting Wrexham’s chances of survival on a day when Peterborough were relegated from League One.
Manager Denis Smith has refused to accept his side are doomed, with the Dragons having two games in hand over their rivals, who include Torquay United who moved out of the relegation zone today with a win at
“In the second half we were bulled off the park but in the first half if you came to watch the game and didn’t know the league table, you would not know we were at opposite ends and would have struggled to tell which team was chasing the title. You need to be mentally strong and when you are doing well things go for you.
“We performed well and dominated the first half. They scored from two set pieces and that shouldn’t happen.
“I don’t concede that we are now relegated. There are twelve points left to play for and we need to turn out performances into wins. We will keep battling away until it is impossible for us to stay up.
“I have to deal with what I have got. There are two sides to football; you have got to be physically and mentally strong.
“It’s no use staying in the league and winning if there is no club at the end of it. I’m not happy with the situation, it’s not fair on the players or the staff who keep asking me questions and I’ve not got answers.
"The people who are looking to buy the club are the right people to take it forward. However, they need to deal with Mr Hamilton and until a deal happens, we are stuck.
“In the first half the players deserved medals. If we end up going down, we will be two divisions from where I want this club to be.
“I’m trying to get us to be consistent.
“I’m trying to be upbeat as I don’t like getting beaten. A couple of things went against us second half but both of their goals came from set pieces which is disappointing from our point of view.
“My next problem is that we need three points on Tuesday at Port Vale and that’s as far ahead as I’m looking at the moment.”
Port Vale today won 5-0 at home against Barnsley, and Wrexham will do well to take all three points away from Vale Park.
