Villa Won't Give Up on Bellamy

Aston Villa have revealed they have not given up hope of landing Newcastle United striker Craig Bellamy.

Villa are one of several clubs chasing the Wales international since Magpies boss Graeme Souness made it clear he has no future at St James Park.

The 25-year old is believed not to favour a move to Villa Park but secretary Steve Stride told the Evening Mail: "We're still in there fighting.

"We haven't been informed by the player or his agent that he's rejected us."

Bellamy spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic after a public bust-up with Souness, impressing at Parkhead, however, it seems a permanent move is unlikely.

Everton are also reportedly interested in Bellamy who has insisted he will report back for pre-season training with Newcastle unless he can find a new club before July 4 or is told otherwise.

Bellamy's agent Stephen Homer confirmed that Bellamy had not rejected Villa.

He told the Evening Mail: "There has been no 'turning down' or anything of that sort.

"At the moment he is heading back to Newcastle but things could change."

Despite only playing for Newcastle for half the season last year, Bellamy was voted their player of the year by fans, who slipped to their worst league finish in the table following Souness' decision not to allow Bellamy to play for the club again.
