Welsh Grounds Safer Than Ever

Attending football matches in Wales is safer than ever - despite the various dangers that could cause trips and falls on steps, burns from hot tea and coffee and even painful wasp stings.

The Football Licensing Authority (FLA) reports that only 26 injuries were reported by 750,000 fans attending Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham matches during the 2003/2004 season as accidents dropped to record low levels, with forty-four injuries reported throughout the 2002/2003 season.

The FLA says the continued reduction in injuries at football grounds is a “great achievement” - with a rate of only one injury per 28,960 fans attending games in Wales.

"All three Welsh grounds have made improvements in recent years, with terracing being upgraded and, at Swansea and Cardiff, perimeter fences being taken down.

"Going to football is better, safer and more civilised than ever before.

"Generally the injuries are minor cuts and bruises, scolding from hot coffee and, occasionally in August, wasp stings."
