Captain Craig. Toshack names Bellamy as skipper

John Toshack believes that naming Craig Bellamy as Wales captain will help him to focus on the football.

Bellamy will lead Wales out against Slovakia on Saturday at the Millennium Stadium before finding himself in court next week facing assault charges. He is due in court on Tuesday for a trial expected to last three days. During the trial he will again lead his country as Wales entertain Cyprus on Wednesday.

'I don't see that there is a risk,' said Toshack.

'I see it maybe as a way to take his mind off things as he is not just going out to play as one of the team.

'He is going out as captain so there is that little bit extra.

'I spoke to Craig last week when I realised Ryan Giggs was not going to be able to make it.

'You just have these hunches from time to time that it would be the right thing to do.

'Whenever he comes down here his commitment is always total, always has been.

'I just think that the extra responsibility at this particular time could work for him and for us rather than against us.

'I just looked at the squad and Ryan's absence makes Craig an even more important player.'
