Cyprus v Wales. Match preview

Qualification is all but impossible and would require a freakish set of results. Firstly Wales would have to win all their games including the trip to Germany next month and the Czech Republic would bneed to see a massive dip in form.

Realistically it's not going to happen so to finish top of the rest of the group would be some achievement for Toshack's side. It should also help towards better seeding in future competitions.

Skipper Craig Bellamy is fit to play one week after an operation. It's a shame that his determination and committment isn't followed by some of the other players who can manage games for their clubs but not their country.

Danny Gabbidon remembers the last time Wales played in Cyprus. He was captain as Wales lost, it could have been worse but Lewis Price played superbly to deny the home side more goals.

"This game gives me the chance to return to Cyprus and win when it really matters, with important qualifying points at stake," said Gabbidon.

"What happened last time out was something of a harsh lesson for us, but if we learn from it and win, it will have been an invaluable lesson.

"I remember the Cyprus game specifically because we had just earned back-to-back wins over Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan, our first competitive victories in 14 matches.

"Then we wasted that good work because Cyprus wanted to win more than us. They were winning the 50-50 challenges, much hungrier than us and I found that unacceptable.

"It should have been the biggest night of my career. It was, in terms of being captain of my country, because no one can take that away from me.

"As for the game itself, though, perhaps the least said the better. Other than it was just as well we had Lewis Price in goal. He was brilliant."

These two games should be the easiest two away trips for Wales but Cyprus have proved to be no mugs. They put 5 past the Republic of Ireland, drew with Germany and beat Wales two years ago in that friendly.

Wednesday's opponents San Marino have never earned a qualifying point in Euro Championship history.
