In a season where there has been little to cheer about for Wexham supporters, thousands are now celebrating their team's LDV Vans Cup extra-time 2-0 victory against Southend at the Millennium Stadium.

Captain Darren Ferguson, watched by father Sir Alex Ferguson, sealed the victory at the death after Basque striker Juan Ugarte had opened the scoring for Wrexham.

The result will come as a welcome boost for crisis-ridden Wrexham, who are in administration and facing relegation from League One, and the possible death of the club in the summer as a buyer has still not come forward for the North Wales club with the Cup final earning them somewhere in the region of a quarter- to half a million pound.

Wrexham fans have tirelessly campaigned to save their club throughout the season, with demonstrations, marches, publicity stunts and many fundraising ideas for Wrexham Supporters’ Trust - who did at one point bid to buy the club – however, in the last week Wayne Price and Stuart Smith walked 150 miles from Wrexham to Cardiff to raise money for the club and Nightingale House, raising further awareness of the club’s plight and £10,000 for their troubles.

"In some ways it means the survival of Wrexham is more likely. It make the club a more attractive prospect to buyers.

"It will help in meeting debt. It's put a lot of onus on other people like the council as well as putting pressure on [club owner Alex] Hamilton," he told BBC Wales' news website.

"I was just so proud to be Wrexham and to be Welsh and I'm just ecstatic - I'm so happy.

"The long walk was worth it, for Nightingale House and the club and the amount of exposure it gave the club," said Mr Price.

"I don't want to do it again!" he added
