Gabbidon Out for Revenge

Cardiff City captain Danny Gabbidon has revealed he will be out for revenge when Wales take on England at the Millennium Stadium on September 3.

In the first game at Old Trafford in October England, boasting Michael Owen, Jermaine Defoe and Wayne Rooney in attack, defeated us with a 2-0 win, with Wales on the backfoot for most of the game.

The 25-year old said: "The first game was a busy day for the whole team and me in particular. England played well and we did a lot of defending.

"It was definitely one of my hardest games because they had Owen, Defoe and Rooney playing.

"I was a bit shocked before the game when I saw the team sheet because we didn't really know who would be playing for them. When I saw all three names I just thought, 'Bloody hell'.

"But, despite the scoreline, I thought I held my own against some of the best strikers in Europe.

"I coped and I have enough confidence in myself to think I can do it again.

"I knew I would have to do pretty well just to contain them. It was tough, especially when Andy Melville got injured in the warm up and we had to reshuffle our defence."

Michael Owen is suspended for the game in Cardiff following a booking against Azerbaijan in March, which will comforting to Gabbidon and the Wales defence, with Owen scoring a hat-trick in his last appearance for England against Columbia.

However, Sven Goran Eriksson will still have Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, Andy Johnson, Peter Crouch and others available to him, but Gabbidon is not too concerned by their arsenal of firepower.

"The game is in the back of my mind and it's creeping up on us," he said.

"It would be nice to turn the tables on England this time around because to be honest they gave us a bit of a battering at Old Trafford. We definitely need to win some pride back because World Cup qualification is now out of the window; and besides that, it's a British derby."

John Toshack has already told his players to look to the Wales rugby side who demolished all before them in the Six Nations tournament this year, including World Champions England.

Recognising their achievement Gabbidon said: "The rugby lads have already shown us the way so it would be fantastic to do it as well.

"It would be great to put on a good performance for the home fans in a packed stadium.

"The Welsh fans would love nothing more than to see us beat England. It'll be tough, but why not."

Gabbidon is currently captain of Cardiff City following the sale of Graeme Kavanagh towards the end of last season, however, by the time the international with England comes about, it is expected that he will be settled at another club, most likely in the Premiership.

With the Bluebirds needing to cut their wage bill, it seems certain Gabbidon, as the club's biggest asset will be sold, but for Gabbidon, a move to the Premiership can only help make him a better defender playing against opposition of the highest calibre week in, week out.

Everton, Charlton, West Brom, Fulham and Blackburn have all been linked to a bid, but despite enquiries, no formal bid has taken place, and this week Everton ruled themselves out of a move.

Gabbidon, after 5 years at Ninian Park, admits the time is right to move on.

Many Wales players are in the Premiership and Gabbdion is desperate to join Ryan Giggs, Simon Davies, Robert Earnshaw, Carl Robinson, Carl Fletcher et and others.

He said: "That's the place to be and everyone wants to compete amongst the best players and the top teams.

"The Premiership is where I want to play.

"Earnie has gone there and proved himself and I want to have the chance to prove myself at that level as well."
