"It's obviously not the result we were after but we had real problems with Andy Melville pulling out just before kick-off," Hughes told BBC Sport.
"And then we conceded a very early goal, a deflection by all accounts.
"We've done okay but we were up against a decent international side and at times we were unable to get a foothold in the game."
"However, I felt the lads dug in. It would have been easy for them to capitulate but they didn't and that's credit to them.
"We were just a little bit short today."
