Hughes: We Were A Bit Short

The Wales boss suffered a major blow to his team selection when central defender Andy Melville was forced to pull out of the side after aggravating an injury during the warm up at Old Trafford. Simon Davies reverted to an un-natural right back position with Mark Delaney switching to the middle of the back-four.

"It's obviously not the result we were after but we had real problems with Andy Melville pulling out just before kick-off," Hughes told BBC Sport.

"And then we conceded a very early goal, a deflection by all accounts.

"We've done okay but we were up against a decent international side and at times we were unable to get a foothold in the game."

"However, I felt the lads dug in. It would have been easy for them to capitulate but they didn't and that's credit to them.

"We were just a little bit short today."
