"I hope Toshack gets the job because I'm sure he would do very well," Alonso told the Western Mail.
"He has the experience needed for international football and a record of bringing through young players and making them into stars.
"If Wales need a manager prepared to pick younger players and mould them for the top, then they couldn't have a better man than Toshack.
"He was confident enough to give me my big chance and he has done that with a number of young players down the years who went on to repay that confidence by playing well at the top for club and country.
"Toshack change my view of football. He made me believe in myself, made me think I was wanted and brought the best out of me."
