Wales players dismiss Toshack quit reports
Oct 16 2007 by Phil Blanche, Western Mail

JOHN TOSHACK wasn't ready to walk away from the Wales job after the Cyprus debacle, according to one of his star players.

West Ham's Danny Gabbidon - who has defended himself against accusations that he does not care about playing for Wales - said Toshack was always determined to stay after the Nicosia beating.

The angry Wales boss walked out of a post-match conference following Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Cyprus, after muttering "I am obviously doing something wrong", but reports that he was about to stand down as manager were not taken seriously inside the Welsh dressing-room.

Eastwood denies McCarthy rift
Oct 16 2007 by Phil Blanche, Western Mail

WALES striker Freddy Eastwood has denied reports of a rift with his Wolves manager Mick McCarthy.

The out-of-favour Eastwood has not started a match for a month and has been told by McCarthy he needs to improve his work rate if he wants to displace Andy Keogh and Stephen Elliott in attack.

"People try to say I've fallen out with the gaffer but it's not true," he said. "I think I should be playing but I won't be going to see him and shouting about it. I just need to knuckle down."

Gabbidon: Don't say I don't care
Oct 15 2007 icWales

Wales defender Danny Gabbidon has defended himself against accusations that he does not care about playing for his country in the wake of the disastrous defeat in Cyprus.

The West Ham player has taken much of the flak for Saturday's dreadful 3-1 reverse, but he insisted that boss John Toshack has never given any hint that he was about to quit.

The Wales squad headed for San Marino today and another Euro 2008 qualifier on Wednesday, one that they know they dare not lose.

There are claims that Gabbidon could be dropped for the match, but Toshack has made a special point of holding a private meeting with the player to tell him he is crucial to his plans. But it is believed he has been critical of his attitude.

Gabbidon said: "Nobody can say I don't care. Obviously I was disappointed with the game and my performance. But we have to dig ourselves out of this hole.
