Sky to continue to televise Wales games

The Western Mail reports:

The FA of Wales held a special meeting in Wrexham yesterday to discuss two new £10m plus offers on the table from Sky and BBC Wales.

In the end they chose to go with Sky, who will beam Wales' home qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships under the deal awarded.

BBC Wales had put a tempting bid in front of the FAW, which included a set number of Welsh Premier games, Welsh Cup ties and women's internationals.

But the FAW argue the Sky package as a whole was better and FAW chief David Collins claims it was voted through unanimously.

As well as games featuring John Toshack's team at the Millennium Stadium, Sky have pledged to show a number of U21 internationals.

Coverage of Welsh Premier and Welsh Cup ties, as well as highlights of internationals, will be available to viewers in Wales via a terrestrial broadcaster, say Sky.

Collins said, "We are delighted to be able to continue the highly successful rapport with Sky which we have enjoyed for the last three years.

"The increased funding under the new TV deal will be of huge advantage to the game in Wales."

Vic Wakeling, managing director of Sky Sports, said, "We have enjoyed working with the FAW and showing their internationals across the UK.

"This new deal will feature qualifying matches for the next World Cup and we look forward to following them on that path."
