Staunton under pressure to perform at Croke Park

Ater a 1 - 1 last gasp victory in San Marino, Steve Staunton knows he's under pressure. Even moreso he has to satisfy a huge home support when Ireland play at Croke Park on Saturday.

It's a must win game for both sides if they are to harbour outside hopes of getting anywhere near the top two places.

"The advantage is we'll have 69,000 screaming fans in the stadium, so we're going to have the majority of the support," said Staunton.

"The stands are empty now, but they will be full on Saturday. It is going to be great to see the Irish fans in here waving flags and going mad."

"What goes on on the other side of the white lines won't affect the players. They will have to get on with their performance.

"A lot of the boys born and bred here know what it's all about, and once we get the fans behind us, the players will be okay.

"Most of them watched a (GAA) game here last year before one of the friendlies, but the players were delighted to be out there.

"They were chuffed to be heading into the dressing room and all that. They have enjoyed it, and they're very excited.

"Just as long as we don't start soloing the ball and thinking we can play Gaelic then we'll be all right.

"Hopefully on Saturday they will have got it out of their system and they will be concentrating on the game."
