Wales boss John Toshack is today hoping that West Ham defeat Preston at the Millennium Stadium to win promotion to the Premiership.
While The Hammers need to win to return to the top flight and secure a multi-million bonus, Toshack will be looking to th benefits that could arise from Carl Fletcher playing top flight football week in, week out against some of the best players in the world.
Following a number of retirements in midfield over the past eight months, Fletcher has found himself a regular fixture in the heart of the midfield with Sunderland's Carl Robinson, who will definitely be playing Premiership football this season.
Fletcher has already accepted that going up into the Premiership will be a massive boost to his own Wales ambitions.
Flecther's fortune came after the shock decision by Robbie Savage to retire from international football, and some pundits are talking up a rivalry between the two midfielders in the Premiership this season - a rivalry Fletcher chooses to play down.
"I have worn Robbie's No 7 shirt for Wales, but it's only a number," said Fletcher.
"I just go out there and try my best. I just want to repay John Toshack for picking me in the first place.
"Robbie has been a quality player for Wales over the last five years and every fan will agree that he has been one of the fulcrums of the side.
"But his retirement, with those of Speed, Pembridge, Johnson and Andy Melville, has given new and younger players the chance to shine. The opportunity is there for the likes of myself and Carl Robinson.
"And clearly if we're each in the Premiership next season, the step up to international level won't be so big.
"It's a very exciting time for the pair of us, for club and country. We're each eyeing the Premiership and we're each involved with Wales. New eras can happen overnight or they can take a bit of time.
"With Welsh rugby it took a couple of years for everything to gel, but we have the chance to start it with Welsh football.
"We know we need to move on to bigger and better things and everyone in the squad is pushing in one direction towards that aim. Just as we are with West Ham. We're desperate to go up, we want to be Premiership."
