The 1-0 defeat in Vienna finally put paid to Wales chances of World Cup qualification but Toshack says he has been encouraged by the two performances against the Austrains.
"I was pleased with the systems used here and in Cardiff, those are things we can work with in the future.," the Wales boss said.
Danny Coyne was to blame for the 1-0 defeat in Vienna but Toshack refused to lay all the blame for the defeat on that Burnley keeper, preferring instead to praise the Austrian keeper for his performances over the two games.
"Danny Coyne was very unfortunate to concede the goal, but the most influential player was their keeper.
"Disappointment can sharpen the appetite and I was pleased with the performance."
