Toshack: 'We are in a transitional period'

John Toshack has admitted he has a tough job on his hands. Wales face the Czech Republic today in Cardiff in a Euro 2008 qualifier.

"It is difficult at the moment, there's no doubt about that. I knew this job was going to be hard, and it is turning out to be just that.

"We are in a big transitional period, and it is something we cannot accelerate. It is something that has to be done.

"I honestly think that this is the best way. It is the only way. I firmly believe that, further down the line, we will get the benefit.

"I believe in these lads, it is frustrating at the moment because we have to wait for them. It takes time, longer than I would like.

"But there is no alternative, they have to be pushed through. Ryan is finished now, that's the end of it."

Toshack has seen several senor members of hs squad retire and he's left with a new, younger lookng squad. The latest to hang up his boots is Ryan Giggs. He plays his last game today for his country.

Toshack said: "I have Collins, Ledley, Bale who are still a long way off their peaks. But we feel they are our best and the most important thing is the future of this team.

"Someone else will get the benefits of this team when they mature and get better, I am sure of that.

"We could have kept in a few of the older lads, but it would have got us a couple of points, no more. It wouldn't have helped in the long run.

"I hope there are 15-16 young players we have who will push on and become seasoned internationals. We are talking about players taking on new responsibility.

"I am trying to push the youngsters through as quick as I can, to give us a deeper squad."

He added: "I had a fair idea of what was coming, I knew a few experienced lads would be finishing playing for Wales. They would have to be replaced.

"We had to start looking for young lads, it is difficult at the moment and I am only halfway through my five year contract.

"I would hope that I will be in the job in two and a half years with all these young players coming through."

Toshack added: "This game with the Czechs is very important. We are playing a team with several tough, experienced players. We have to handle it against one of the world's top 10 sides."
