Tosh's thoughts ahead of San Marino

John Toshack tries to make sense of the poor performances from his Welsh squad.

"We have one player who has won everything over and over and over again.

"But if you look around the rest of the squad, none of them have won anything. It is maybe an attitude that we have to contend with.

"Maybe it is the lack of a winning mentality. When you have tasted it, you want more of it and when it goes you get worried and want it back.

"A winning mentality was drummed into me at Liverpool but, apart from Ryan Giggs, we are not a group of people who understand and have won a lot."

"When you look at our back line you see players who are all mainly in relegation fights. Sam Ricketts at Hull, James Collins with West Ham, Lewin Nyatanga at Barnsley, there is a problem.

"While Steve Evans, who played very well in Dublin, has Wrexham's fight to stay in the league on his mind.

"But they have to put all of that sort of thing to the back of their minds."

"What we have to do is react the way we did after losing to Slovakia, we did that with the win over Cyprus. We have to do the same again."

"What we have to do is win to get our confidence back. But we must also look at the positives.

"If we can beat San Marino twice we will have nine points. We have two games in hand on the Irish, and if we can beat them when they come to Cardiff, and we are capable of that, we will be right behind them.

"If we can then get something from the Czechs when they come to Cardiff, we will be back in it. We have to think like that, we are capable of such results."
