Valentine called up

Valentine has joined up with the Welsh camp and is obviously delighted.

"Obviously, I'm also very happy.

"One of the reasons for returning to play my football in Wales was that I might work towards a place in the national squad.

"To achieve that ambition so soon is just beyond anything I had imagined.

"I was hoping that in a year or two something might happen, but for it to occur now - well just I'm shocked!"

His club manager, Denis Smith, is pleased for the youngster.

"I know the Wales management team have noted the progress of Ryan this season, so this shouldn't comes as too much of a surprise, but I'm still delighted now it has happened," said Denis.

"The player has performed well for me since switching from Darlington, setting himself a high standard, but one I'm sure he can maintain.

"If he does that, then the rewards are out there for him and this is proof of that.

"His selection reflects well on Ryan and on the club. To have players in the U21 set up is an honour, but when you are also having them included in the senior squads, then that says very positive things about what we are doing here.

"John Toshack has already been to see us play and I know several of our players have performed well enough to impress him. If we can continue to play at that level, on a consistent basis, then this is an incentive for others to push their claims.

"We all wish Ryan well and hope he gets the chance to get onto the pitch at some stage."
