A better Welsh performance was not enough to earn a win needed to keep alive any slim hopes of qualification. Jason Koumas came closest for Wales when a rasping free kick thumped back off the post with Petr Cech beaten.

Craig Bellamy took over the captains armband in the dying minutes to allow Giggs a standing ovation. Bellamy will now keep the captaincy for his national side.
