Wrexham Reach LDV Vans Trophy Final
Last updated : 11 March 2005 By Gary Fish
Wrexham striker Chris Llewellyn ended any hopes Oldham had of reaching the final on 65 minutes with a tame shot fumbled by keeper Pogliacomi finding it’s way into the back of the net.
Hopes were high in north Wales following the first leg at Boundary Park, which Wrexham won 3-5 to give them a fantastic head-start for tonight’s game.
Although they had a two goal advantage, Wrexham might have tried to maintain that lead and employ a defensive game, however, with the side in full confidence following the weekend’s spectacular 6 goal haul at Hartlepool, they went flat out for goals from the start.
Wales U21 international Mark Jones nearly scored early on but Will Haining's challenge blocked his shot and the ball ran to Llewellyn, who was denied by the keeper's brave diving save.
Wrexham were also denied an early penalty appeal when Guy Branston's pull on in-form Basque hit-man Juan Ugarte brought him down in the box but referee Graham Laws overruled his assistant and waved play on.
Oldham, dominated by Wrexham, made two openings as Neil Kilkenny set up a chance with a well-placed corner that zipped through a crowded goalmouth, while 41-year old David Eyres fired an angled shot over the crossbar.
At the other end Jones was just too high with a 20-yard drive, while Ugarte saw a shot blocked with Darren Ferguson tamely striking the rebound tamely against the foot of the post.
As Wrexham continued to pressurise Oldham almost took the lead through Branston, as his firm header was tipped over the bar by on-loan keeper Ben Foster.
Branston was then sent off on the hour for a foul on Carlos Edwards and there was no way back for the Latics.
Llewellyn's goal followed within five minutes as he combined with strike partner Juan Ugarte to fire home from 18 yards, allowing Wrexham to spend the last period camped out in Lactics territory, knowing that they had secured a trip to the Welsh capital on Sunday 10th April.
