Bellamy having medical at Blackburn

Newcastle United striker Craig Bellamy is having a medical with Blackburn Rovers today.

The 25-year old Welsh international is at Ewood Park ahead of a proposed move to the Lancashire club in a deal worth around £5m.

Bellamy has been exiled at United since his public bust up with chairman Graeme Souness resulting in his loan move to Celtic for the second half of last season.

Celtic - who had a first option on Bellamy - were expected to try and take the striker on a permanent deal, however, failed to meet Newcastle's asking price and preferred to take him on a season-long loan.

Aston Villa and Everton as well as Rovers had also been keen on signing Bellamy with Everton's David Moyes believed to have been in talks with Bellamy earlier this week.

However, with Bellamy having a medical at Ewood Park, it would seem that the link up with former Wales boss Mark Hughes and countryman Robbie Savage is one of the deciding factors in a move to Blackburn.

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd said:

"I can assure Celtic fans that their club did everything within its power to try and get the Bellamy.

"But it seems the lure of the Premiership is obviously too much."

Bellamy joined Newcastle from Coventry in June 2001 for £6m.
