Everton speak with Bellamy

Everton and Wales winger Simon Davies has urged boss David Moyes to secure a £6m deal for Wales team-mate Craig Bellamy.

Moyes is still pondering a move for the 25-year-old striker following his bust up with Newcastle boss Graeme Souness earlier in the year.

Davies joined Everton in a £4m deal from Spurs in the summer and said: "Craig is the calibre of player Everton are trying to bring in. He would be a great addition to the squad.

"He's a good lad to have and wants to win so much. Sometimes he needs to curb that because it overspills."

Davies added: "But that's a good quality to have. He'd be a great player to have."

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd revealed he has given Everton and Celtic permission to talk to Bellamy.

He said: "Right now everything is up in the air and there is a long way to go. There hasn't been a firm bid and we haven't agreed a fee with anyone.

"I understand that won't be a problem for either club, so in the end it will be down to Bellamy himself."

Bellamy is believed to have met Moyes on Sunday, although it is expected a bid will be made by Blackburn Rovers in the coming days.

Moyes was coy about whether Bellamy would be his latest signing at Goodison Park.

"I don't talk about players at other clubs," he said. "It is not my way.

"We are hoping to land one or two more before the season starts though, that is for sure, and ideally we would like to get them in quickly."

Celtic have been ruled out of signing Bellamy leaving just Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Everton in the running for his signature.
