Purse to stay with Baggies

West Bromwich Albion defender Darren Purse has vowed to stay at The Hawthorns and regain the club captaincy, snubbing Cardiff City who were keen on signing the 28-year old.

Purse has been linked with a move to the Welsh capital in the last week but the former Leyton Orient, Oxford and Birmingham City centre-half is not interested in a move away from the Midlands.

Purse said: "I have always said I want to stay at Albion and I haven't had any phone calls from my agent or anyone else

"I wouldn't want to move from the area I live in as the kids are settled.

"It's my ambition to get the captaincy back and start playing regularly again.

"I still believe I am the best centre half at this club.

"The end of last season was demoralising for me at times as I was always in the 18 man squad and travelling every game but I was never on the bench.

"These things happen in your career so I have to be positive and bounce back even stronger.

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones will now have to look elsewhere as he looks to bridge the gaping hole left by Danny Gabbidon and James Collins move to Premiership side West Ham United.
