Smith may not be able buy Wrexham

Prospective Wrexham FC owner Andy Smith has revealed he may not be able to buy the club within his second agreed "lock-out period".

The Surrey-based property developer signed an exclusivity agreement with the club's current owner Alex Hamilton on June 21 allowing him three weeks to complete a deal for the League Two club and preventing other parties from interrupting the sale.

The agreement between Smith and Hamilton put the brakes on a bid by local businessmen Neville Dickens and Geoff Moss to secure the future of the Racecourse and the club, which surprised the administrators and Supporters' Trust and angered fans.

The club's administrators have gone to the High Court in Birmingham to challenge Hamilton's ownership of the ground.

A statement on the website of United Plotowners Associates Cymru Ltd - the company set up to handle the purchase of the club and surrounding property - Smith conceded he was struggling to meet the July 15 deadline.

"The intervention of the administrator was unhelpful and may indeed hinder our ability to complete in the 'shut-out period'," Mr Smith said.

"We are proceeding towards the purchase of the club and are taking legal advice regarding the proceedings instigated by the administrator," he added.
