U21 League Farce

The new Welsh Under-21s League got off to a disastrous start last night with four of the five games postponed as clubs could not field teams.

As the Welsh Premier League and FAW work to try and improve the domestic game in Wales this farcical beginning to the U21 League cannot bode well for the junior competition.

Welsh Premier secretary John Deakin admitted: "I really am shocked these games are off... because the clubs can't raise teams for various reasons.

"There have been problems signing players so I'm concerned, and I'll convey that to the clubs' directors."

Before the introduction of the league, there was no proper competition for the youngsters of Welsh clubs, with many looking to go to England to get experience of football.

A number of the Welsh Premier clubs were keen for their youngsters to have a league in which to play, however, as a result of the rules of various other leagues not being clear, clubs are struggling to sign players to be able to play them.

Deakin is hoping that some of the regulations preventing clubs from doing this will be ammended, and will raise the issue at a meeting next week.

He added: "The clubs wanted the league because they wanted a good standard of football for their young players, but a lot of these players are signed for other local clubs.

"Because of various rules that some leagues have in Wales - which I have to say are not really legitimate rules - they're being prevented from signing for Welsh Premier clubs in the Under-21 League.

"I'll not talk directly to the leagues but I'll certainly speak through the area associations to see what can be done.

"It is important we get this league off the ground as a pathway for these younger players into the senior team."
