Jol: Spurs must win opener

Spurs coach Martin Jol has admitted that his side must win their opening game of the season against Portsmouth if they are to have any chance of living up to the high expectations the club have this season.

The club have had a series of "impressive" wins over the pre-season including victory to lift the Peace Cup against Lyon, while they ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Porto on Saturday where seasoned campaigner Edgar Davids and England striker Jermaine Defoe were impressive.

Some pundits have gone as far as to say Spurs can even challenge Liverpool and Everton for the fourth place in the league.

Jol said: "Pre-season has been good. It is sometimes said - if you are superstitious - that if you win all the games you could have a bad start. Losing against Porto wouldn't have been so bad in terms of making sure we keep our feet on the ground, but I still prefer to have a win.

"We played well in the first half and played some good football in the last 20 minutes. There were some positive things and Edgar Davids got a very good reception. All the new players played at White Hart Lane for the first time as Spurs players and I think everybody got a good impression of them.

"Edgar's welcome was extra special, now he knows what the fans are like and all about Spurs. We've got a great crowd and they appreciate it when players like him make the decision to come.

"I think it is something to be proud of, but I also tell the boys that they should be proud to be Spurs players. That is the main thing, it is not about players, it is about this club.

"We are now getting ready for the first game of the season against Portsmouth and it is always difficult. It is five weeks since we started and we're doing well.

"We're building and we will go on and improve the fitness levels and our play. We start with an away game and it is always a tough game at Portsmouth. We are confident, but still have to work on minor things.

"We will be on our game and hopefully we can do well because we could do with a very good start to the season. Everybody expects a lot and we have much to live up to."

Spurs travel to Fratton Park on Saturday for their season opener and they would be expected to take nothing more than three points if their Champions League dream this season is to come to fruition.
