Newcastle United have revealed they have ended their bid to sign Fenerbahce striker Nicolas Anelka at the request of the Turkish club.
Chairman Freddy Shepherd and manager Graeme Souness have finally admitted defeat in their bid to sign the former Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City foward despite pursuing him for several weeks.
Shepherd told the club website:
"As Nicolas Anelka has only been at Fenerbahce for six months and the club have said he's never been for sale, we have been requested not to pursue the matter any further and we have agreed to do this.
"However, I can assure our supporters that we are still actively exploring other options in the transfer market."
Newcastle are desperate to replace Craig Bellamy who was sold to Blackburn Rovers in the summer, and Patrick Kluivert who returned to Spain after a disappointing season in the Premiership.
