Trundle looking to success

Swansea City striker Lee Trundle is insistant he can score the goals that will fire the League One side into the top play offs this season.

Trundle made the claim as the Swans prepare for tomorrow's opening League One match at home to title hopefuls Tranmere Rovers.

The club anticipate some 16,000 supporters to pack into the New Stadium - the club's biggest crowd for 23 years - as they look to get the new season off to a flyer.

Trundle, has been a prolific goalscorer in League Two - scoring 45 goals for Swansea since his move from Wrexham two seasons ago.

The 28-year old said: "We want to push for a play-off spot, and I'm confident I can help get us there by scoring more goals than I did last season.

"I don't mind it if the team depend on me for goals. I'm quite happy to shoulder that responsibility because I know I can step up into this division and carry on scoring."

Trundle's abilities have been called into question by fans and pundits alike, many feeling that he will not be able to cut it in the higher divisions, however, he is keen to prove his critics wrong.

Once slated for his fitness, Trundle has shed an amazing 11lbs this summer after going on a voluntary fitness drive, and he is adamant he'll be able to bang in the goals in League One and spearhead another Swans promotion push.

He added: "I'm aware that a lot of people say 'He's done well in League Two, but can he do it at a higher level?' It's something that's spurred me on in as far as improving my fitness and looking forward to the new season.

"You can't change what people think off the field. You've just got to believe what you can do yourself and go out and play.

"I scored goals in this division for Wrexham. It's not something that's going to worry me.

"Yes, we're stepping up a level, but the way I look at it is you're still playing against 11 other players. I'll always get chances in games and I believe that through the season I'm going to score a lot of goals."

Trundle was surprised to find that he failed to make a list of 17 strikers by bookmakers Coral in their Top Scorer list.

Trundle retorted: "Not in the top 17 strikers in the division? I'd expect to be top of the list!"

Trundle is also confident that Kenny Jackett's side will be successful this season.

"I definitely think our squad is good enough to make the top six," he said.

"We don't want to come in and just try and hold our own and be at the bottom in a dogfight because the players we've got here are better than that.

"It is a step up for us and we're not saying we're going to go out and trample all over teams. That's never going to happen.

"Last year was a hard test for us and this year will be the same, but I believe that we can get through it.

"As a team and as players, you can't go into a division worrying about what's going to happen, thinking 'Are they going to be better than us?' We're not going to be scared of anyone.

"Tranmere got into the play-offs last season and everyone's tipped them to win the division so they're going to be strong first opponents.

"It's a good test for us, but it's a test everyone is looking forward to."
